So many people don’t know that there are some Governors presently in Nigeria, who were professionals in their field of Engineering before diving into politics.
Below are four governors who are Registered Engineers;
1. Engr. Babagana Umara Zulum:
He is the present governor of Borno state, he was elected into office in the governorship election of March 9, 2019. He studied at the University of Maiduguri, where he obtained a Degree in Agricultural engineering. His first appointment was in 1989 with Bornu State Civil Service as an Assistant Technical Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture. He was a Senior Engineer, later Principal Water Engineer at Borno State Unified Local Government Services. He also became a Professor at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Maiduguri.
2. Engr. Dave Nweze Umahi:
He is the current governor of Ebonyi state, Nigeria. He studied at Enugu state University of Science and Technology in 1982. He graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of science degree in Civil engineering.
He co-founded Norman Engineering and Construction Nig. Limited and served as it General manager. He served as chairman and CEO of Brass Engineering and Construction Nigeria Ltd, Focus investment Nigeria Limited, and Osborn LA Palm Royal Resort Limited.
3. Engr. Abdullahi Sule:
He is the serving governor of Nasarawa state, he was elected in the 2019 governorship election.
He left Nigeria on a scholarship to study at Indiana University, Terre Haute, Indiana, USA where he obtained a Bsc in Mechanical Technology and a Masters Degree in Industrial Technology.
He worked with Jos Steel Rolling Mill in 1985 as a Production Engineer. He co-founded Sadiq Petroleum Nigeria Limited in Lagos and was made the Managing Director/CEO. He was the Group Managing Director of Dangote sugar refinery PLC.
4. Engr. Seyi Makinde:
He is the governor of Oyo state in Southwestern Nigeria. He is an engineer and a subject matter expert on Fluid and Gas Metering. He gained admission into the University of Lagos where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
He did his NYSC with Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), where he served as a Pupil Engineer. He also worked with Rebold International Ltd as a Field Engineer and he was later appointed as Field Manager in the same company.
In 1997, Makinde established his first business; Makon Engineering and Technical Services Ltd (METS) after working for five years in various international oil and gas companies as Engineering Manager.
He is a member of the Nigerian society of engineers (NSE), Council for regulations of Engineering in Nigeria(COREN).
They were all doing very well in their various fields before moving into politics. They are also registered under relevant bodies governing the practice of engineering in Nigeria.
