Obaseki’s Disqualification In APC Might Be A Good Blessing For PDP In Edo State

It is no longer news that Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State was disqualified from the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress, which is slated to hold on June 22, 2020.

But what some people don’t know is that this disqualification from APC might actually turn out to be a big blessing for the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

Governor Obaseki’s disqualification came on Friday after the party’s screening committee said they found discrepancies in his names and certificates, and also for suing the party, which is against the party’s rules.

The committee said that Obaseki could not produce the certificate to back up his Higher School Certificate from the Institute of Continuing Education in Benin City, that what he only produced was a document to validate his attendance.

Another issue raised about his certificate was that his NYSC certificate reads “Obasek Godwin”, that though the error might have been from the NYSC, but the Governor never took steps to correct it.

He was also disqualified on the grounds that the Governor took the party to court. Apart from Governor Obaseki, other aspirants that were disqualified were Chris Ogiemwonyi and Matthew Iduoriyekenwen.

The aspirants cleared by the committee to take part in the party’s primary were Dr. Plus Odubu, Mr. Osaro Obaze and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Those who have been following the politics in Edo State know about the running battle Governor Obaseki has been having with the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomole, who is also Obaseki’s predecessor and former godfather. So many people already saw this coming.

Reports have emerged that since his disqualification from the APC primary, other political parties have started courting Governor Obaseki to come and run for the governorship election under their platform.

But from all indications, and from reports gathered, it seems Obaseki might already be on his way to PDP. Many are expecting him to be the party’s flag bearer at the state governorship elections, which is slated to be held on September 19th.

As a proof of that indication, Governor Obaseki paid a visit to the governor of Rivers State, Governor Nyesom Wike of PDP during the weekend. This can only mean that, he is meeting with the PDP stalwarts to discuss his chances.

Over the weekend, reports had already emerged that he will be given automatic ticket in PDP, but the party had given him some conditions to meet.

The conditions include – he must meet with the three aspirants in the state that were already screened by the party’s screening committee, and reach an understanding with them.

He was also directed to meet with the party leadership in the state to discuss with them, and seek for their support.

This really appears as a big opportunity for PDP to win Edo State. As an incumbent governor of the state, Obaseki already has an upper hand at the next election. The advantages that come with the status will come into play.

We all know how difficult it is to unseat an incumbent governor at any election in Nigeria, so this disqualification from APC is certainly the opportunity that PDP has been looking for to win Edo State from APC’s hold.

Because as an incumbent governor, Obaseki will move to PDP with his supporters and connections, and make things work in his favor ahead of the state governorship election in September.

So this might actually turn out to be a big blessing for PDP.
